I think Hassan Nasrallah description of the film "Innocence of Muslims" as humiliating has interesting implications about our First Amendment rights as Americans in light of the fatal attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, on September 11, 2012, particularly the films role in this event.

This quote gets at the heart of the uprisings in the Middle East, not just the recent ones but the uprisings that have been occurring since the Western world invaded in hopes of colonization. So much of the violence is due to religion, lack of tolerance, and lack of respect. Muslims in the Middle East feel, as Nasrallah said, "humiliation" when others, particularly the West, disrespect Islam. While the conflict between the Middle East and the United States goes much, much deeper than the anger over the film "Innocence of Muslims," it is precisely for displays of blatant disrespect and even hatred such as that that cause the violence to continue. Until Western powers respect the sacredness of Islam, no amount of military power will bring stability to the region.

This quote embodies the complexity of emotions that comes with such a controversy of showing the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) on a film, and the need for awareness across all media. 7/2/2013 03:09:38 pm
