This quotation is one that represents the reason I’m disillusioned with politics. I’m not going to point fingers because I truly do not believe that any individual is particularly culpable—but the reality is that the complexity of policy and everything that goes into making important decisions is too complicated to explain to the masses. However, this fact can also become an excuse, in that it can facilitate and excuse reductionist spin. We get buzz-words and phrases like the need to “stand up to China,” that are presented and disseminated from a perspective that is much more geared towards emotional appeals. This strategy is heightened during election season—and particularly during political debates, when people are looking for politicians who get them excited about and emotionally invested in the prospect for positive change—however unrealistic that politicians alleged plans might be!
