Sylvia Hatchell's diagnosis of leukemia was heartbreaking, but it is very encouraging that she is fighting the cancer and remaining involved with the program. The diagnosis was sudden and she was whisked off practically overnight to the Lineberger Center. I think her video was encouraging to the fans of both men's and women's programs and reassuring to her players. It also got the fans more involved in the women's part of Late Night with Roy, a section usually filled with awkward silences and light clapping.

Sylvia Hatchell is such a strong and influential woman. Her diagnosis devastated athletes, faculty, and members of the Chapel Hill family. Her presence at Late Night with Roy has been assumed through the years, being the head women's basketball coach, but this year she was dearly missed. Seeing her face on the big screen in the Dean Dome truly brought smiles to the entire crowds' face as well as her team standing in the middle of the court. These girls have fought and won under Sylvia and without her on the court there with them was truly something out of the ordinary. Her inspiration words and beaming character exploded off the screen and brought the crowd to its feet. Hopefully she did hear us all screaming for her as she underwent treatment in the Lineberger Center.

Hall of Fame Basketball Coach Sylvia Hatchell has a reputation throughout the basketball and UNC communities for being a strong, character-oriented woman. She is known for pushing her players and influencing them not only to become better basketball players on the court but also become better individuals in their lives. She serves as an example for all, and I think this quote exemplifies her strength and fearless nature. As someone who has grown up watching Coach Hatchell on the sidelines, I, like so many others, was heartbroken to hear the news of her diagnosis the day the information was released. However, I am also encouraged by how she already showed that she is ready to fight it and will not let this setback deflate her. She is not afraid to let the world know the struggle she is facing, and I believe she is using it to help encourage others to face challenges head on. The quote shows how much she misses what she usually does here at Carolina and how eager she is to be involved with her team and this entire University. She wants people to be excited and support one another. This also gives the Carolina Community another opportunity to come together to support her and our women’s basketball team during this tough time and beyond.

Sylvia Hatchell plays a big role in the image for the UNC women's basketball team because, unlike the players that graduate, she is one of the faces around for many years that fans consistently see on the sidelines. It must be a daunting task to face such a tough personal struggle (cancer) while preserving a strong public representation. This quote and video from Late Night with Roy from Sylvia Hatchell is both impressive and inspiring because she is able to embrace her struggles and comfortably and appropriately invite the public into her personal life. Once again, proving she is a great face for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Sylvia is such an inspiration! Despite the hardships she may be facing with her health, she proves to be a strong and inspirational woman for everyone to look up to at UNC. This quote shows her true passion for UNC and her strength. To be able to say something so inspirational when going through so much, really shows a lot. One of my favorite quotes. Leave a Reply. |
