This was one of my favorite moments in UNC football this season. We all know NC State can be some of the most annoying opponents we have, and I was so thankful to win! Gio's final punt return was incredible. ...The idea that we "needed" Gio was an understatement; we were desperate for our star player to get on the field and bring it home. Thankfully, that was exactly what he did.

I love this quote because I think primarily it shows the team's cohesiveness and dependence on one another. In Renner saying this to Bernard, he is acting as a leader and a team-player in acknowledging Bernard as such a crucial player in the game. It is a dramatic quote that led to a dramatic win! 11/27/2012 05:19:21 am
In one of the most sensational episodes of the UNC-State rivalry, our field general Bryn Renner inspired the prolific punt return that sent the Wolfpack packing. He called on Carolina's Black Knight to save the day after a stagnant 2nd half left the Heels facing an uphill battle. But the day was won thanks to Renner's wise words. It turns out a little GIO was all the Heels needed to snap NC State's longest winning streak against them in series history. Now, on to basketball...

Gio Bernard is, without a doubt, the lifeblood of the UNC football team. His courage and tenacity throughout the season was highlighted during the NC State game. His game winning punt return was a defining moment in his career, bringing national attention to the talent all Tarheel fans already knew and loved.

Renner knew exactly what to do to push Gio over the edge and unleash his superhero-like football talent. Minutes later, he made his way down the field in a streak of Carolina blue scoring the game-winning touchdown. I was in the student section that day and will never forget the eruption of cheers that ensued after Gio's touchdown. The entirety of UNC was unified by that 43-35 victory over NC State. #GioForPrez

I love this quote because you don't need to know any of the context to appreciate what is being said. Gio could be any one of us and that's what makes it epic. It's not about football it's about stepping up and trusting yourself to do what you already know you can. It's not about winning or losing, but what you learn about yourself in the process.

"IN GIO WE TRUST!" That's what i used to shout every home game when Gio Bernard would touch the ball. He was by far the best running back I have ever witnessed in person. I still remember his game winning touchdown like it was yesterday. I usually do not stay the entire game, but this one was too good not to. All hope seemed to be lost and it looked as if State might get us, but then Gio did what Gio does and that's score the football. He is missed!

I don't know much about football, but what I do know is that Gio Bernard is a phenomenal football player. Although UNC isn't known for its football team, Gio put hope in the school and created a new dimension to the game. We depended on Gio and he exceeded our expectations. School pride is such an important thing to me and he made everyone even prouder than they already were to be a Tarheel. We as a school, as a cohesive group of people, stood behind him and with our support, he did amazing things and will continue to do so. And no matter how famous he gets, he will most likely remember the days of being a Tarheel and this game-winning touchdown against State.

Despite our bowl-ban last year due to the academic scandal of years past, Carolina football fans can always look back to last season’s primary shining moment: Gio’s game-winning punt return against State. Naturally, Gio was the first running back taken in the NFL Draft and he left us to further his career in Cincinnati. And he has continued to excel as a Bengal. In his first three games, he already has three touchdowns. We could sure use him now, especially after this season’s slow 1-3 start. Keep up the good work, Gio! 10/8/2013 12:22:07 am
Great post, thank you.

Gio's presence is greatly missed on the field this year, thanks to our slow 1-4 start this season. While I don't know much about football, I do know a thing about wins and losses - and losing on Saturdays now is significantly less thrilling than last year's game-winning touchdown against N.C. State. Our offense has continued to produce as much as it can, but our defense needs to step up if we want to salvage the season. Go Heels! :) Leave a Reply. |
