This is an interesting comment. What does a mother do when their child does something so very wrong? They have grown up loving their child unconditionally, and this shows that a lot of times they do not stop.
I think Phillip's mom wanted to let everyone know that she loves and cares for Phillip no matter what, but also wants to show that he did not shoot the teacher because of a lack of love on her part. This produces an extremely interesting dynamic.
I think this quote is heartbreaking. Even though Phillip has committed a heinous crime, when his mother looks at him she still sees the little boy she has raised and loved unconditionally for fourteen years. How are you supposed to reconcile the fact that the baby you cradled in your arms is the same young man responsible for murder? The phrase "her son was born in love" is perhaps the most emotional part of the quote because it's a grim reminder that sometimes the people you love the most will do terrible things, no matter how much love and support you give them. Ms. Chism wanted to make everyone aware that Phillip's crime was not born from a broken home or years of abuse, but from something else entirely. And while that may serve as some small comfort to her, it's a horrifying thought for the rest of us.
In a mother's perspective, they will always love their child no matter what they have done. It is seen by this quote that Ms. Chism was in shock of what her son did and wants the public to know that it also came to a surprise to her as well. She had cared and loved for her son, which would not have led to his crime. As a loving mother of course, she wants to protect her son from the consequences and wants people to know that she taught him right despite his actions.
This comment breaks my heart because I can only imagine the struggle Ms. Chism is going through. What Philip Chism did was horrifying, but a mother's love towards her son is an extremely strong bond. Ms. Chism will always love her son no matter what, even if she is disgusted by what he has done.
