I'm happy to hear that people out there are recognizing the impact of the NHL lockout on its fan and consumer base. This is the third lockout to occur in the NHL under Gary Bettman's reign as commissioner, which I find ironic seeing as Bettman studied at Cornell University in its School of Industrial and Labor Relations. There is obviously something very wrong with the NHL as an organization and hopefully it begins to realize its negative effect on one of its most important publics--the fans.

After reading this quote, I looked to the source to see which brand was facing such a negative image. It ended up being about the NHL. It was a bit surprising to see my favorite sport's organization being compared to the tragic BP oil spill. I mean, sure I was upset about the lockout, but as a hockey-lover I'm just glad that the season is up and running again. Hopefully, the NHL sees that it upset its fans and all of the negative feelings that arose, and they will not fight so much over details that results in lockouts and delayed seasons.

I think that it is interesting to look back at this quote as the new NHL season is starting tonight. It seems that the league brought back majority of it's fans last year for the short season but with the help from the success of certain franchises. The Stanley Cup Finals also contributed to the successful short season as two popular teams dominated in playoffs. I follow the NHL very closely and it does seem that less advertising has gone into getting people to games this year---compared to last season. Meaning teams must be confident that if they play, the fans will come.

This quote pretty much sums up for me just how important our job in Public Relations actually is to a brand. I am not someone who pays even the slightest bit of attention to the NHL, and yet I knew that people were unhappy with it, even the hardcore fans. When an organization messes up, word spreads quickly and touches even more people than good news would.

THANK YOU! Hockey IS a major sport! So glad this quote made it up here! People always look at my like I'm crazy when I tell them I'm a hockey fan! Hockey fans have had a rough few decade to say the least. We lost coverage on ESPN and had to wait for a new broadcaster to air the games. And then there were a few lockouts in recent years. Hockey fans are a dedicated bunch. It's nice to get a little recognition especially in the south! I can honestly say I never had a twitter account until the NHL lockout last year. But maaaan did I get on and make sure everyone knew I was a fan and that I was disappointed with the league. Now a PR major at UNC I absolutely see the value in social media. I used it to get my voice out as did so many others. Looking back I remember a great commercial ("Because it's The Cup. It's time to get weird") that came out just after the lockout ended. The whole message was a celebration of the fans and their dedication to The Cup. And the background music (I love hockey till the day I die) just reified the message. I hope to one day meet the PR team/person who put it together. It was a thing of beauty. Leave a Reply. |
