As a senior Global Studies major who has put in countless hours of work to graduate with this degree from UNC, it was a huge disappointment to hear that the department was canceling our graduation ceremony. The opportunity to physically walk across a stage is important to not only my family, but many others as well. I'm glad that the department solved this issue and decided to move forward with the graduation ceremony, but am saddened that it took so much negative feedback to make this occur. In the future, a department graduation ceremony should be factored into the budget at the beginning of the year to ensure that each student gets his or her chance to walk across the stage.

I think it is a shame that a department of our university is so underfunded and understaffed that it can't even have a proper graduation ceremony, an event that is one of the most important in a lot of people's lives. I know that the Econ department also faces similar financial and staff shortages.

It was a relief to hear from the Daily Tar Heel that the UNC global studies commencement is no longer canceled, but will be held on May 11 in Memorial Hall.

It's hard to hear news like this without getting angry. What is UNC doing with its money? They're cutting funding on just about everything and now they're taking away individual program graduations? As Carolina students, we are all working our way towards that final moment when you know you've finally made it. Graduation. And because we go to a public university with about 4,000 students per graduating class, the only time you're going to get that "walking-across-the-stage-to-accept-your-diploma" moment is in your department graduation. I felt terrible for the senior global studies majors who have put in four or five years of hard work at Carolina. Having spoken to a couple of them, I saw firsthand the extreme disappointment they were faced with. When the University reinstated the Global Studies graduation ceremony, you could almost hear a collective sigh coming from around campus. Everything was okay, graduation was still coming, and every senior would get their diploma moment. Leave a Reply. |
