This quote speaks volumes on how seemingly little progression we have made to make voting accessible for ALL citizen of the United States. We, as a country, have vowed time and time again to give the people the resource necessary to be able to participate without disruption in the major freedoms awarded by our founding fathers, however it seems every time I read the newspaper or watch CNN, a governing body has found a loophole to keep someone, a racial group, age group, religious group, from this participation.
This is not limited to voting. It is told to high school student across the country the importance of having a college degree, how accessible college will be if they work hard and "do things right", but college system around the country implement rigorous application processes and financial aid requirements that deter potentially students from applying. And if they do have the money and resources to make it through those processes, the out of pocket fees are too overwhelming. While many of us can afford to stroke checks for tuition, there are many out there that would have to decide between putting themselves and their parents into never ending debt from college costs or getting whatever job they can to help make ends meet.
Voting, education...neither should be a challenge, both should be invitations.
