I think a large reason marijuana is now legal in certain US states is the supply of money it will bring to domestic firms rather than foreign firms. The demand for marijuana is certainly there, and since illegal transactions and imports are not included in US GDP, thus not contributing to economic growth (something this country is in desperate need for) it would make sense to legalize it and grow it ourselves. Rather than the government pumping money into our own economy which will only temporarily affect US GDP, economic innovation and demand for "new products" is a sure way to boost our economy in the long run. It may be hypocritical, but on an economic stance it makes perfect sense to prohibit legal and illegal imports of marijuana from Mexico and legalize the growth and sale of it within the US borders.
