-Journalist Costas Vaxevanes of the magazine Hot Doc said of his decision to publish the names of prominent Greeks who possessed Swiss bank accounts and were suspected of using them for tax evasion. His choice to reveal the names comes with his suspicion that the Greek government did not publish the list in order to protect friends of ministers, those in business and powerful publishers (10/31/2012).

As a journalist I can fully appreciate this quote. It's important for readers to know the truth, and if it requires calling out people in positions of power for their wrongdoings then so be it. Tax evasion is a serious crime and it is not fair to put a group of prominent Greeks under suspicion in order to protect the reputations of a select few. It was a bold move on the part of Vaxevanes, but it was a wise one that certainly paid off. Leave a Reply. |
